Mao is the second work in my Tabernacle of Memories series, aligned with ‘The Emperor’ in tarot. At its centre, a 1968 bust of Mao Zedong is reimagined in a feminised, theatrical form, ringed with pearls, a red bindi, and symbols of transformation such as wings, feathers, shells, and butterflies. The piece plays with irony and reverence, blending political iconography with themes of memory, ancestry, and aesthetic fortune.

All works are printed by a Hahnemühle Certified studio in Cape Town, South Africa. Each work is inspected, signed and editioned by Wim van Zyl.
